the benefits of soy wax.

So, what exactly is soy wax?

Soy wax is often used to create soy wax candles. Vegetable wax derived from soybean oil is called soy wax. Soybeans are cleaned, dehulled, split, and rolled into flecks after harvest. From these specks, oil is then extracted and hydrogenated. The procedure results in the saturation of the oil's unsaturated fatty acids, which significantly changes the melting point of the oil. Then, at normal room temperature, it solidifies.

The Origins of Soy Wax

It's interesting to note that soy wax was created in 1996 at Purdue University by a group of college students. The assignment required the pupils to create a birthday candle using a sustainable resource. They decided to make use of soy oil. The Indiana Soybean Development Council and the Purdue University Department of Agronomy held a competition in which the students successfully solidified soybean oil and took first place.

Not only did Plain janes Candle Co. Soy Candles launch with the Purdue invention of soy wax, but the soy candle market as a whole also began with it!

Soy wax benefits

  • Soy wax is obtained from plants (soy beans), whereas paraffin wax is derived from petroleum (a refined gasoline product).
  • Soy wax is a sustainable natural resource.
  • Soy wax is biodegradable and easily removed with soap and water.
  • Because soy wax has a lower melting point than paraffin wax, soy candles will burn slower or longer than paraffin candles.
  • Soy wax produces no petro soot when burned, resulting in petro soot-free candles. Petro-soot is caused by the burning of paraffin candles.

While utilizing soy wax has numerous advantages, Plain janes candles stand out from paraffin and other soy candles thanks to our unique fragrances which you can find here.
